Hovdsundet is a Beach at Mjelle, Bodø, Norway

Hovdsundet is a quiet coastal spot on the shore near Mjelle, northeast of Bodø, in Nordland in northern Norway. It sits away from the crowds. Reached down a rough track and a short walk from the road, this is a stretch of sound and shoreline in wild country, backed by heather-clad slopes and looking out to open sea and distant islands. Nearby Mjelle is known for its unusual reddish sand, and the whole coast here has a stark, elemental beauty, all rock, wind and water. In summer people come to walk, swim in the cold Atlantic and camp under the midnight sun. Bodø lies just north of the Arctic Circle at around 67°N, well inside the auroral zone, and with no settlement lights nearby and a clear seaward horizon, Hovdsundet is a fine, lonely place to watch the northern lights over the water on a dark winter night.
