Keiservarden is a Mountain at Keiservarden, 8015 Bodø, Norway

Keiservarden is the classic viewpoint above Bodø, a broad, rocky plateau on the fell just east of the city in Nordland, northern Norway. The name means the Emperor’s Cairn. It comes from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II, who admired the panorama on a visit in 1889, after which a cairn was raised to mark the spot. And what a panorama it is: from the plateau the eye sweeps over Bodø and its harbour, the open sea and countless islands, and the serrated peaks of the Lofoten and inland ranges. A well-trodden path climbs to the top in half an hour or so from the edge of town, making it one of the most popular walks in the area, busy in summer and floodlit for winter strollers. Bodø sits just north of the Arctic Circle at around 67°N, well within the auroral zone. On a clear winter night the open plateau, raised above the worst of the city glow, is a favourite local perch for watching the northern lights spread over the sea and mountains.

Aurora hunting in Bodø?

The aurora season here runs from September to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. With minimal light pollution, Keiservarden could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.

  • Nice place to hike to! Views over the whole city in all directions. Lovely in summer. There are different places you can walk here from. Highly recommended!!

    Fin plass å gå tur til! Ser utover hele byen i alle retninger. Nydelig om sommeren. Er forskjellige plasser en kan gå hit fra. anbefales på det sterkeste!!
