Saltstraumenbrua is a road bridge that arcs across the Saltstraumen strait, a short drive southeast of Bodø. Below it runs one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, where huge volumes of water force through the narrow sound with each turn of the tide, throwing up swirling whirlpools. The bridge and the shore around it serve as a lookout over the churning water, busy with anglers and visitors when the current is at its height. Out beyond the edge of town, with open water and hills around, it is also a fine place to watch the northern lights over the strait on dark winter nights.
