Torneträsk is a Lake and Scenic Lookout in Kiruna, Sweden

Torneträsk is a large mountain lake in the far north of Swedish Lapland, in Kiruna municipality. It stretches some 70 kilometres through a broad glacial trough between the peaks of Abisko and Björkliden. One of the biggest and deepest lakes in Sweden, it is the source of the Torne river, which flows on to trace part of the border with Finland before reaching the Gulf of Bothnia. The railway and road linking Kiruna and Narvik run along its shores, and the villages of Abisko and Björkliden sit on its southern side. Away from these the lake is wild and open, ringed by fells and looking out to the notch of Lapporten. Frozen much of the year, in winter it becomes a highway for skiers, snowmobiles and ice fishers. It also offers something the fells cannot, a vast, unobstructed horizon. Within the clear skies of the Abisko blue hole and with almost no light along much of the shore, that makes the lake one of the finest aurora settings in the region, the lights stretching right across the sky and reflected in the ice.

The aurora season here runs from September to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. The natural setting around Torneträsk makes it a wonderful spot to watch for the Northern Lights.
