Swedish Lapland, the country’s vast northern region above the Arctic Circle, is home to some of the most reliable aurora viewing conditions in Scandinavia. The area around Abisko is particularly renowned, a unique microclimate created by the surrounding mountains and Lake Torneträsk produces exceptionally clear skies, giving Abisko one of the highest rates of aurora visibility in the world.
Abisko’s Aurora Sky Station, a chairlift-accessed viewing platform at 900 metres, is one of the most celebrated aurora viewing spots anywhere. Nearby Björkliden shares the same favourable climate in a quieter setting, and Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city, provides a more urban base with good transport connections, including the famous Icehotel in nearby Jukkasjärvi.
Swedish Lapland offers dog sledding, snowmobile safaris, cross-country skiing, ice fishing and Sámi cultural experiences. The region is accessible by air via Kiruna Airport (with flights from Stockholm) or by the overnight sleeper train from Stockholm to Abisko, one of Europe’s great railway journeys.
