The Troll Museum is a small, quirky attraction in the centre of Tromsø, devoted to the trolls of Norwegian folklore. It leans into the fun. Part exhibition, part storytelling, it introduces the trolls of Nordic legend, the lumbering giants of the mountains, the hidden folk of the forest and the creatures said to turn to stone at the touch of daylight, and explains the part they played in how country people once made sense of a wild and often frightening landscape. Displays, models and tales fill its handful of rooms, and it is aimed squarely at families and the curious rather than the scholarly. In the old stories the strange lights of the winter sky were bound up with this same world of spirits and omens, long before science explained the aurora. It makes a light-hearted half-hour, and a reminder that these northern lands have always been rich in myth.
