Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, the Art Museum of Northern Norway, sits on the harbourfront in the centre of Tromsø. It is devoted to the art of the north. The collection and its changing exhibitions gather painting, sculpture, crafts and contemporary work from and about northern Norway and the wider Arctic, with a strong emphasis on Sámi art and on the landscape tradition, those dramatic depictions of fjord, mountain and midnight light that first drew outside artists to the region. Housed in a handsome early twentieth-century building, once a bank, the museum is known for its ambitious, sometimes provocative programming. It has a café and a well-stocked shop. For anyone curious about how this remote, luminous corner of Europe has been seen and imagined by its artists, it makes an absorbing hour or two.
