Grønlands Nationalmuseum

Grønlands Nationalmuseum is a History Museum at Hans Egedesvej 8, Nuuk 3900, Greenland

Grønlands Nationalmuseum, the Greenland National Museum, is the national museum and archive, set among the old colonial harbour buildings of Nuuk. Its collections trace more than 4,500 years of human history in the Arctic. They run from the earliest Palaeo-Eskimo cultures through the Thule people to the Norse settlers and the modern Greenlandic nation. Pride of place goes to the Qilakitsoq mummies, a remarkably preserved group of Inuit from the fifteenth century, shown alongside kayaks, hunting tools, national costume and religious artefacts. The museum also helped bring thousands of Greenlandic objects home from Denmark, and today it guards the island’s cultural heritage. Nuuk stands at around 64°N on the southwest coast. Its maritime setting brings more cloud than the drier interior, but the winters are long and dark, and on clear nights the aurora is easily seen over the fjord and the surrounding mountains, even from parts of the city.
