Greenland
Greenland is the world’s largest island, yet home to only around 56,000 people, almost all living in small coastal settlements. This extreme remoteness means virtually zero light pollution across the entire country, and aurora viewing conditions that are hard to match anywhere else on earth. The Northern Lights are visible across Greenland from September through to April, with the dry inland climate of places like Kangerlussuaq offering some of the clearest skies in the Arctic.
Each Greenlandic destination offers something distinct. Ilulissat has its UNESCO World Heritage icefjord, where the aurora reflects among enormous icebergs. Nuuk, the capital, combines cultural attractions with a vast uninhabited fjord system. Kangerlussuaq, deep inland, has statistically the clearest skies in the country. Qaqortoq in the south offers Norse ruins, hot springs and a quieter, less-visited experience.
Greenland is not an easy destination to reach, and infrastructure is modest compared to Scandinavia, but that is part of its appeal. Dog sledding on sea ice, boat trips among icebergs, musk ox spotting and encounters with Inuit culture give a Northern Lights trip here a depth and rawness that more developed destinations cannot replicate.
