Mývatn is a Lake at Mývatn, Reykjahlíð, Iceland

Lake Mývatn is a shallow, island-studded lake in the volcanic country of north Iceland, the centre of one of the island's most remarkable landscapes. Its name means midge lake, for the clouds of insects that in turn feed an extraordinary abundance of birdlife, and it draws more species of duck than almost anywhere. Around its shores lie lava pillars, craters and geothermal fields. At around 66°N, close to the Arctic Circle, its dark skies make the whole area a fine place to watch the northern lights.

The aurora season here runs from September to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. With minimal light pollution, Mývatn could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.
