Dimmuborgir is a weird and wonderful field of lava formations near Lake Mývatn, its name meaning the dark castles. Twisted pillars, arches and hollow towers of black rock rise from the ground, formed when a lava lake drained away and left these strange shapes behind. Walking trails wind among them, and Icelandic folklore peoples the place with trolls and, at Christmas, the mischievous Yule Lads. Its brooding landscape stood in for Mance Rayder's wildling camp in the television series Game of Thrones.

Aurora hunting in Akureyri?
The aurora season here runs from September to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. Head to Dimmuborgir after dark for a chance to see the aurora away from artificial light.
What do people think of Dimmuborgir?

Parking available, sevral paths , some of them take hours of walking ! The most important ones are 15-20 minutes walking. Good for pics.

Great place for a relaxing walk/hike and watching natural volvanic lava formations. Feels like in another world; the whole area feels the same..
