Leirhnjúkur is a geothermal and lava area within the Krafla volcanic system north of Lake Mývatn. A marked trail leads across still-steaming ground and fields of black lava left by eruptions in the 18th century and again in the 1980s, past bubbling mud pots and vents. The raw, smoking landscape is among the most otherworldly in Iceland, a place where the earth feels barely settled.
