Krafla is a Volcano and Other Great Outdoors at Kröfluvegur, Reykjahlíð, Iceland

Krafla is a great volcanic system north of Lake Mývatn, centred on a caldera that has erupted many times, most recently in the fires of the 1970s and 80s. Its landscape of craters, lava fields and steaming ground includes Víti, an explosion crater holding a vivid blue-green lake, and a geothermal power station harnesses the heat beneath. It is one of the most geologically active and fascinating places in the country.

Aurora hunting in Akureyri?

The aurora season here runs from September to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. With minimal light pollution, Krafla could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.

  • Definitely do the trek around the volcano craters, don't drive past, from the road it's not obvious where everyone is going. Touch the earth's heat with your hands.
