Lakagigar is a Hiking Trail in Skaftárhreppur, Iceland

Lakagígar, the craters of Laki, is a great row of volcanic fissure craters in the highlands north of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. It was here in 1783 that one of the most devastating eruptions in recorded history tore open the earth, pouring out a vast flood of lava and a haze of poisonous gas that killed much of Iceland's livestock and people and chilled the climate across the northern hemisphere. Today the moss-covered craters stretch for 25 kilometres across a haunting highland landscape, reached in summer by rough mountain roads.

The aurora season here runs from September to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October and March. With minimal light pollution, Lakagigar could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.
