Viðarlundin is a Park at Hoydalsvegur, Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

Viðarlundin, also known as Plantasjan, is one of the largest parks in the Faroe Islands, set in the middle of Tórshavn between Varðagøta, Hoydalsvegur and Gundadalsvegur. Trees are a rarity across the wind-scoured islands, which makes this wooded green space something special. Paths wind among the trees and along the river, past a pond with ducks and swans, and the trunks toppled in the Christmas storm of 1988 have been left as a natural climbing frame for children and adults alike. Sculptures are dotted through the grounds, among them a memorial to the Faroese seamen lost at sea in the Second World War, and the Art Museum of the Faroe Islands stands at its northern end.

The aurora season here runs from October to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in November and February. Head to Viðarlundin after dark for a chance to see the aurora away from artificial light.
