Listasavn Føroya is an Art Museum at Gundadalsvegur 9, 100 Tórshavn, Faroe Islands

Listasavn Føroya is the National Art Museum of the Faroe Islands, in the capital Tórshavn. It holds the country’s foremost collection of Faroese art. The galleries trace the story of painting in the islands from the late nineteenth century, when the first Faroese artists trained abroad and began to turn the dramatic local landscape into art, through to bold contemporary work. Names such as Sámal Joensen-Mikines, whose dark, brooding canvases capture the weather and grief of island life, sit alongside later and living painters and sculptors. The building stands on the edge of town near the wooded Viðarlundin park, an unusual patch of trees in a country that has almost none, and light-filled rooms open onto that greenery. As well as its permanent displays the museum runs changing exhibitions, and it has a café and shop. It makes a quiet, rewarding stop on a rainy Faroese afternoon, of which there are many.
