Skansin is a Lighthouse at Yviri vid Strond, 100 Tórshavn, Faroe Islands
Skansin is a historic fortress on a low hill beside the port of Tórshavn. It was raised in 1580 by Magnus Heinason to guard the town against pirate and slave raids, after he was nearly caught in one himself, and it was much enlarged in 1780 and rebuilt many times since. Old Danish cannon still stand on the ramparts, joined by two British naval guns from the Second World War, when the fort served as the British base during the occupation of the islands. A lighthouse rises over the walls, and the raised position gives fine views across the harbour and out to the island of Nólsoy. At around 62°N, on a clear, dark night the seafront ramparts make an atmospheric place to look north for the aurora over the water.
