Hjálparfoss is a Waterfall in Iceland

Hjálparfoss is a twin waterfall in the Þjórsárdalur valley of south-central Iceland, where two streams converge and drop side by side over a wall of columnar basalt into a wide, blue-green pool below. The name is thought to derive from travellers crossing the highland interior, after long journeys over barren lava fields, the lush grass and fresh water here offered welcome relief. The surrounding rock formations are particularly striking: hexagonal basalt columns frame the falls like organ pipes, and the pool at the base is dotted with dark volcanic boulders. Hjálparfoss is easily reached via a short detour off Route 32 in the Þjórsárdalur area, not far from Háifoss and the historic farmstead of Stöng. A short path leads from a small car park down to the falls. Despite its beauty, Hjálparfoss is often overlooked by visitors heading to more famous sites, meaning you can frequently enjoy it in relative solitude. The valley is quiet and sparsely settled, with open skies in all directions.

  • It's an amazing waterfall that is nearby the "Golden circle". It doesn't get a lot of attention, so it's not crowded.
