Gjáin is a small, green oasis in the Þjórsárdalur valley in the highlands of south Iceland, a startling burst of lushness amid the surrounding volcanic desert. Waterfalls, ponds, twisted lava rock and wildflowers fill a sheltered hollow, and paths wind among them. Off the beaten track and reached down a rough road, it is a magical spot that has featured as a filming location, including in Game of Thrones.
