Ritakoski is a short nature trail near the village of Inari in northern Finnish Lapland, leading to a set of small but picturesque rapids on the Juutuanjoki river. The trail leads through quiet boreal pine and birch forest, following the riverbank before arriving at the rapids where the river narrows and tumbles over rocky ledges. The path is well maintained with duckboards over the wetter sections and is accessible to most fitness levels year-round. In summer, the riverside is lush and green and the rapids are popular with fly fishermen. In winter, the forest is buried under deep snow, the river partially freezes into sculptural ice formations around the rocks, and the trail becomes a peaceful snowshoe or cross-country ski route. Ritakoski sits at nearly 69°N in one of the least light-polluted regions of Finland. The open clearing at the rapids provides a break in the tree canopy, useful for aurora viewing, as the surrounding forest can otherwise obstruct low-horizon displays. It is a short drive or walk from Inari village, making it an easy evening destination for Northern Lights watching without needing to venture far into the wilderness.
