Sjunkhatten National Park is a rugged coastal wilderness northeast of Bodø, spread across the municipalities of Bodø, Fauske and Sørfold in Nordland. It was created with families in mind. Often called the children’s national park, it was set up to bring young people and newcomers into the wild, and it is laced with accessible trails, marked routes and simple cabins alongside genuinely remote country. The landscape is classic Nordland, deep fjord arms reaching in from the sea, sheer glacier-carved peaks, hidden lakes and caves, and the distinctive saddle-shaped summit of Sjunkhatten that gives the park its name. Walkers, climbers, paddlers and skiers all find their ground here through the seasons. Reaching well north of the Arctic Circle at around 67°N, deep inside the auroral zone and far from any town glow, the park has superb dark skies, and on clear winter nights the northern lights blaze over its frozen fjords and peaks.
