Nordlandsmuseet is the regional museum of Nordland, with its main branch in the centre of Bodø. It gathers the history of the county under one roof. The displays trace the story of Bodø and the wider region, from the fishing and trade that built the coastal communities to the Sámi presence in the interior and the dramatic events of the twentieth century, including the bombing that flattened much of the town in 1940. Among its prized possessions is a hoard of Viking-age silver, one of the finest found in northern Norway. The museum is the hub of a network of sites scattered across Nordland, the Jekt Trade Museum and the Kjerringøy trading post among them. Compact and central, it makes a good first stop for making sense of the region before exploring further afield.
