Trollsjön is a Hiking Trail in Abisko, Sweden

Trollsjön, the Lake of the Trolls, is the clearest lake in Sweden. Known in Sámi as Rissajávri, this small glacial pool sits in the Kärkevagge valley in the mountains of Swedish Lapland, west of Abisko near the Norwegian border. Its meltwater is filtered through rock and snow, so pure and free of sediment that you can see the boulder-strewn bottom several metres down through pale turquoise water. Reaching it takes a hike of around six kilometres each way, up a wild valley strewn with huge fallen boulders and framed by steep peaks, from the mountain station at Låktatjåkka or the settlement of Vassijaure. It is a popular summer walk, the surrounding fells still holding snow well into the season. This is mostly a daytime destination, but the valley lies at around 68°N and, far from any road or streetlight, its nights are genuinely dark. Come late in the season, as the light returns to the evenings, and walkers who linger by the shore stand a good chance of the northern lights mirrored in that still, glassy water, framed between the dark walls of the Kärkevagge.

The aurora season here runs from September to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. With minimal light pollution, Trollsjön could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.
