Aurora Sky Station is one of the most famous places on Earth to watch the northern lights. It sits high on Mount Nuolja above Abisko, at around 900 metres, reached by an open chairlift from the mountain station. The ride up, over birch forest and fell, is memorable in itself. The station stands within the Abisko blue hole, that pocket of unusually clear, dry sky created by the rain shadow of the surrounding mountains. At around 68°N deep in the auroral zone, raised above any valley haze and with very few competing sources of light or sound, it is exceptionally well placed for the aurora. From the exposed platform you look out over Torneträsk and the notch of Lapporten while the lights move overhead. It is more than a lookout. There is a café and restaurant serving Arctic-inspired food, guided evening visits through the winter, and an exhibition on the science and folklore of the aurora. In the lighter months it opens by day for sightseeing and dining with panoramic mountain views.
