Few places on Earth are as bound up with the northern lights as Abisko. The reason is a quirk of geography. Mountains around the park cast a rain shadow that opens the so-called blue hole of Abisko, a pocket of unusually clear, dry sky. Add a position at around 68°N deep in the auroral zone, and next to no light pollution, and you have one of the most reliable aurora spots anywhere, with displays on a high proportion of clear winter nights. There is far more to the park than its night skies, though. Abisko National Park lies in Swedish Lapland, in Norrbotten County some 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, on the southern shore of the great lake Torneträsk. Established in 1909, it is one of Sweden’s oldest, a wild sweep of mountain birch forest, open fell and the deep U-shaped valley of the Abiskojåkka, whose canyon cuts toward the lake. It is the northern gateway to the Kungsleden, the celebrated long-distance trail, and its mountain station draws walkers, skiers and photographers all year. A short chairlift climbs to the Aurora Sky Station on the slopes of Mount Nuolja.
