Kungsleden is a Hiking Trail at 981 07 Abisko, Sweden, located in Abisko National Park

Kungsleden, the King’s Trail, is Sweden’s most famous long-distance walk. It runs for roughly 440 kilometres through the mountains of Lapland, from Abisko in the far north to Hemavan in the south. This point is its northern trailhead at Abisko, where walkers set out through birch forest and open fell into the wilderness. The classic and most popular stretch links Abisko to Nikkaluokta, passing beneath Kebnekaise, Sweden’s highest peak, and threading between glacier-carved valleys, rushing rivers and reindeer-grazed tundra. Mountain huts and STF stations, spaced about a day’s walk apart, let you trek in relative comfort. Summer is the main season; deep snow turns the route into a ski tour in winter. The northern reaches begin at around 68°N, under some of the darkest skies in Europe. That makes the trail a rare thing, a place to see the aurora from your tent, far from any settlement or artificial light, the lights filling the sky above the fells on clear nights well into the trekking season.

The aurora season here runs from September to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. The natural setting around Kungsleden makes it a wonderful spot to watch for the Northern Lights.
