Twin Pine Hill Trail is a short, rugged little loop in central Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It climbs a low outcrop of Canadian Shield bedrock, the ancient rock that shapes so much of this landscape. The path is rougher than the smooth city walkways nearby, scrambling over bare stone and between scrubby pines to a modest summit. The reward is the view. From the top you look out over Frame Lake, the surrounding boreal woods and the rooftops of the town, and the trail ties into the wider Frame Lake network below. It makes a fine perch after dark. Yellowknife sits at around 62°N almost directly beneath the auroral oval, one of the best places anywhere for the northern lights, and its dry, clear skies deliver them on a remarkable number of nights. A little height and an open horizon are just what aurora watching wants, and on a crisp winter evening the lights sweep over the lake and woods from here.
