Niven Lake Trail is a short, easy walking loop on the northern edge of downtown Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It circles Niven Lake, a small pond with an unlikely past. Once the town’s sewage lagoon, it has been reclaimed as a wetland and is now a haven for birds, with ducks, loons, gulls and songbirds nesting among the reeds. Boardwalks and gravel paths carry you round the water in under an hour, past interpretive signs and benches, and it is popular year-round with walkers, joggers and families. In winter the frozen lake becomes part of the town’s ski and snowshoe network. Yellowknife is one of the finest places on Earth to see the northern lights, sitting at around 62°N almost directly beneath the auroral oval under famously clear, dry skies. This quiet lakeside, only a short stroll from the centre yet screened from its brightest streets, makes a handy spot to watch the aurora on a crisp winter night.
