Miles Canyon is a steep-walled basalt gorge on the Yukon River, just upstream of Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon. The river narrows here and runs green and fast between dark columns of ancient lava. During the Klondike Gold Rush this was a fearsome obstacle. The rapids that once churned through the canyon wrecked boats and drowned stampeders, until a tramway and later a dam tamed the water, the dam backing up the river into today’s calm Schwatka Lake. The historic Robert Lowe suspension bridge spans the gorge, and a network of walking trails threads the clifftops and riverbanks on both sides, popular with hikers, cyclists and, in winter, skiers. It is one of the most scenic and easily reached spots near the city. Whitehorse lies at around 61°N, close beneath the auroral oval and one of the more reliable aurora regions in North America. On a clear winter night, with the river frozen and the trails quiet, the northern lights arc over the canyon rim above.

Aurora hunting in Whitehorse?

The aurora season here runs from August to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in September, October, February and March. With minimal light pollution, Miles Canyon could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.

What do people think of Miles Canyon?

  • For a quick hike with wonderful views : near the suspension bridge, walk the Lower Canyon City trail (be careful..) and return via the Upper Canyon City Trail. About 3 km round trip)
