The S.S. Klondike is a grand old sternwheeler riverboat, beached and restored on the bank of the Yukon River in Whitehorse. It is a National Historic Site of Canada. Boats like this were the lifeline of the territory, carrying passengers and freight up and down the river between Whitehorse and Dawson City in the days before roads reached the north. This one, the largest of the Yukon fleet, ran until 1955, when highways finally made the paddlewheelers obsolete. Today it stands in dry dock, carefully returned to its 1930s appearance, and guided tours lead visitors through the wheelhouse, cabins, cargo deck and engine room.
