Tromsø Museum is a History Museum at Lars Thørings veg 10, Tromsø, Norway

Tromsø Museum is the university museum of northern Norway, at the southern end of Tromsøya island. It is the oldest scientific institution in the region, founded in 1872. Its wide-ranging displays span the natural and human history of the north, from the geology, plants and animals of the Arctic to the archaeology of the first settlers and a rich section on Sámi culture, with sacred drums, costume and the story of a people and their reindeer. One gallery is given over to the aurora, and fittingly so. Tromsø has long been a centre of northern lights research, and the museum traces both the science of how the aurora forms and the myths that once explained it. There are dinosaur casts and a church-art collection too, along with a botanical garden nearby. It is a proper rainy-day museum, generous and a little sprawling, and a good place to understand the region before heading out into it.
