Múli is a Scenic Lookout in Borðoy Island, Faroe Islands

Múli is a tiny, all but abandoned hamlet on the island of Borðoy, in the Norðoyar region of the Faroe Islands. It clings to the outermost northern edge of Borðoy’s east coast, beneath steep green mountains that drop straight to the sea. The origins of the settlement reach back to the fourteenth century, but for most of its life it was among the most isolated places in the country. There was no road here until the 1990s, and no mains electricity until 1970. Once the road finally arrived, the last residents had already drifted away to easier lives elsewhere, and today the handful of houses stand mostly empty, kept up as summer homes. It is a quietly haunting spot, all silence, birdsong and the sound of the Atlantic. The setting makes a fine scenic lookout, with sweeping views along the coast and across the sound to the neighbouring islands. Múli sits at around 62°N, and though the North Atlantic sends plenty of cloud, the clear nights that do come bring a real chance of the northern lights, with no village lights left to dim them above the empty houses and the dark water below.

Aurora hunting in Tórshavn?

The aurora season here runs from October to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in November and February. The natural setting around Múli makes it a wonderful spot to watch for the Northern Lights.
