Gásadalur is a Village in Gásadalur, Faroe Islands

Gásadalur is a tiny, remote village on the western edge of the island of Vágar in the Faroe Islands, home to only a handful of residents. It is best known for the iconic Múlafossur waterfall, which plunges directly off a cliff into the Atlantic Ocean beside the village, with the dramatic sea cliffs and the peak of Mykines in the distance, it is one of the most photographed scenes in the Faroes. For centuries Gásadalur was one of the most isolated settlements in the country, cut off from the rest of Vágar by steep mountains. Residents and post had to be carried over a high mountain pass on foot, or hauled up the cliffs by a small cable lift. That changed in 2004 when a tunnel was bored through the mountain, finally connecting the village to the road network and making it easily accessible by car. Today visitors can drive to a small car park and walk a few minutes to the waterfall viewpoint, or take the more rewarding old postal route, a hike over the mountain from the neighbouring village of Bøur, offering superb views down onto Gásadalur and its surroundings. The village has a small café but few other facilities, retaining its quiet, end-of-the-world atmosphere. At 62°N and far from any significant light source, Gásadalur offers dark Atlantic skies, and on the clear nights that break through the region’s frequent cloud cover, the aurora can appear over the cliffs and open ocean.
