Levijärvi is a small lake in Finnish Lapland, in the municipality of Kittilä, tucked at the foot of the fell that gives Levi its name. Levi is the busiest ski resort in Finland, and the lake sits right beside the resort village. In summer its shores are a place for walking, swimming and paddling under the long northern daylight, with cafés and hotels close at hand. Winter transforms it. The lake freezes solid, snowmobile tracks and ski trails run across and around it, and the surrounding fell fills with skiers. Levi lies at around 68°N, well inside the auroral zone, so the northern lights are a frequent winter sight here. The resort itself throws off a fair amount of light, but walk a little way out onto the frozen lake or into the fells behind, and the aurora shows clearly over the snow. Many visitors combine a ski holiday with an evening of aurora hunting on the ice.
