Ensilumenlatu is a Ski Trail in Kittilä, Finland

Ensilumenlatu (First Snow Trail) is a cross-country ski track near the Levi ski resort in Kittilä, Finnish Lapland. It is one of the earliest ski trails to open each season in Finland, typically operational from mid-October, weeks before natural snowfall is sufficient elsewhere, thanks to snow that has been stored from the previous winter and spread along the route in autumn. The trail is a dedicated loop of around 1.5 km through open fell terrain and sparse birch woodland, groomed for both classic and skate skiing styles. It draws keen skiers from across Finland and beyond who are eager to get their first turns of the season in. The Levi area sits at around 67.5°N, comfortably within the auroral zone, and Ensilumenlatu’s location away from the resort’s main village means relatively dark surroundings once the trail lights are off. In the early season, late October through November, the days are already short, with only a few hours of twilight at midday and long, dark evenings. Combined with the open fell landscape and Lapland’s dry, cold continental air (which favours clear skies), the area around Levi offers excellent conditions for aurora viewing throughout the ski season.
