Urho Kekkonen National Park is one of Finland's largest, spreading east from the resort of Saariselkä across a vast sweep of open fells and forested wilderness. It is a hiker's park, laced with trails and dotted with wilderness huts where walkers can shelter and warm up at the end of a long day. Somewhere in these far reaches lies Korvatunturi, the fell that Finnish tradition holds to be the secret home of Santa Claus. The park sits at around 68°N, deep in the auroral zone, and its dark, open country is superb for the northern lights on a clear winter night.
