The World Ice Art Championships turn Fairbanks into a gallery of ice each late winter, drawing sculptors from around the globe to the city's Ice Park. Using crystal-clear blocks quarried from local ponds, some of the finest in the world, carvers create everything from delicate single-block pieces to vast multi-block scenes, lit up in colour after dark. There is an ice playground with slides for children too. Held over several weeks, the event makes the most of the deep Interior cold. At around 65°N, on a clear night the aurora may appear overhead as visitors wander among the sculptures.

Day time is just as fun as night. Enjoy the ice slides - there is typically a broken sled piece near the slides you can grab and use vs buying or bringing one.

Bring your own gear they don't rent, have to buy the sleds.... hard to pack on a plane back..... but great fun for the kids
