The University of Alaska Museum of the North stands on the hilltop campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, its sweeping white form built to echo the glaciers, mountains and northern light of the surrounding land. Inside, its galleries gather together the natural and cultural history of Alaska, from dinosaur fossils and Ice Age creatures to thousands of years of Native art and artefacts. A sound-and-light work devoted to the aurora runs in one gallery, and from the campus ridge the view reaches over Fairbanks to the Alaska Range. The city lies at around 65°N, almost beneath the auroral oval, making it one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights.
