Pioneer Park is a heritage theme park on the banks of the Chena River in Fairbanks, Alaska. It is the city’s window onto its Gold Rush past. Built in 1967 for the centennial of the Alaska Purchase, it gathers together dozens of genuine log cabins and pioneer buildings, saved from old Fairbanks and rearranged into a walkable historic townsite. Among its centrepieces is the Nenana, a huge wooden sternwheeler that once plied the rivers of the Interior, now beached and restored. There are small museums of aviation, native culture and pioneer life, a working narrow-gauge railway that loops the grounds, a carousel, craft cabins, cafés and a summer salmon bake. Admission to the park is free, and it is busiest in the long daylight of the northern summer. Fairbanks lies at around 65°N almost beneath the auroral oval, and is one of the very best cities in the world for viewing the aurora, though for that most head out of town to darker ground once the winter nights close in.

  • If people say you should visit "Alaskaland" they mean this place. It's hopping in summer with shows, the salmon bake, air museum, & the train (a must for all ages). The gallery is open year around.
