Rosabella Lake is a small tundra lake on the outskirts of Churchill, in northern Manitoba, just inland from the shore of Hudson Bay. It is one of the many shallow lakes and ponds that freckle the flat, treeless country here, where boreal forest gives way to open sub-Arctic tundra. In summer its margins come alive with wildflowers, nesting waterfowl and wading birds, and the surrounding wetlands draw birdwatchers, while polar bears, Arctic foxes and caribou move across the tundra nearby. For much of the year it is frozen and silent under snow. That stillness is the backdrop to some of the best aurora watching anywhere. Churchill lies at around 59°N directly beneath the auroral oval, and with a wide, open horizon and almost no light pollution, a spot like this is ideal, the northern lights showing on a high proportion of dark nights, mirrored in the ice and stretching from horizon to horizon.
