The Polar Bear Holding Facility, known locally as the polar bear jail, is where Churchill keeps bears that wander into town until they can be safely released. Churchill sits on a major polar bear migration route, and in autumn the animals gather along the coast waiting for Hudson Bay to freeze. Bears that stray too close to people are held here and later moved away or flown back out onto the ice, part of the town's long effort to let people and polar bears share this coast.
