The Churchill Northern Studies Centre is a research and education station out on the tundra east of the town, near the old rocket range. Scientists come here to study the Arctic, its wildlife and the aurora, and the centre runs learning programmes and offers lodging to visitors. Far from any town light and at around 59°N, beneath the auroral oval, it is one of the finest places anywhere to watch the northern lights on a clear winter night.
