Flattop Mountain is the most-climbed peak in Alaska, rising in the Chugach foothills on the edge of Anchorage. The trail up from the Glen Alps trailhead is short but steep, scrambling over rock near the top to the mountain's distinctive flat summit. From there the view opens over the whole city, Cook Inlet and, on a clear day, Denali far to the north. Easy to reach from town and hugely popular, it is a favourite spot for sunset, for the midnight sun in summer and for the northern lights on a dark winter night.

The aurora season here runs from September to April, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in October, February and March. With minimal light pollution, Flattop Park Trail could offer a dramatic backdrop for aurora viewing.
