Chugach State Park is a vast tract of mountain wilderness on Anchorage's eastern doorstep, among the largest state parks in the United States. Its peaks, valleys, lakes and glaciers rise straight up behind the city, giving residents an enormous playground for hiking, skiing, climbing and wildlife watching within easy reach of town. Trails such as Flattop climb into it from the edge of Anchorage. The high, dark backcountry, well away from the city's lights, is among the best places nearby to watch the northern lights on a clear winter night.
