The summit of Mount Alyeska rises above the resort at Girdwood, southeast of Anchorage, and is reached by aerial tram from the valley below. In winter it is the heart of Alaska's best-known ski area; in summer it is a viewpoint and a starting point for walks along the ridge. From the top the eye sweeps over the surrounding peaks and glaciers and down to the waters of Turnagain Arm. The high, open ground also makes it a striking place to catch the northern lights when they appear on a clear, dark night.
