Alta River Camping sits along the Alta River about five kilometres south of the town centre, near the E45 that runs on toward Kautokeino and the Finnish border. It has a spread of cabins, apartments and rooms across several buildings, around 90 beds in all, with a good number kept open through the winter, plus a hut sauna. Open all year, it works both as an overnight stop and as a longer base for the Alta and Finnmark region. Out along the river with dark surrounding skies, it is well placed for the northern lights in a district long known for them.
