Solheimasandur Black Sand Beach is a Beach in Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland

Sólheimasandur is a vast black sand plain on Iceland's south coast, west of Vík, where glacial rivers have spread dark volcanic sediment out to the sea. Flat, bleak and elemental, it is best known as the setting for the wreck of a US Navy DC-3 aircraft that crash-landed here in 1973, whose skeleton still lies on the sand. At around 63°N, the wide, dark expanse also makes a dramatic foreground for the northern lights on a clear winter night.
