Hálsanefshellir is a cave set into the basalt cliffs at Reynisfjara beach near Vík. Its walls of hexagonal basalt columns and honeycombed rock make a striking sight, formed as lava cooled and cracked into these regular shapes. It sits right on the black sand, close to the reach of the sea, so the dangerous sneaker waves that sweep the beach demand real caution when visiting.
