Skansen is a Monument in Tromsø, Norway

Skansen is the oldest surviving structure in Tromsø, tucked by the harbour near the Polar Museum. It is easy to walk past without noticing. What remains is a low, grassy earthwork rampart, the last trace of a fortification whose origins may reach back to the medieval period, long before the modern town grew up around it. Later it served as a customs post and a quarantine station, and today the old timber buildings within the earth walls are in private hands. There is little to see beyond the mound itself and an interpretive sign or two, but its quiet spot on the waterfront, with views across the sound, makes a pleasant pause. For a town that feels thoroughly modern, Skansen is a reminder of just how far back its story runs.
