The aurora season here runs from September to March, with the best chances of seeing the Northern Lights in September, October, February and March. Perspektivet Museum makes for a great daytime activity while you wait for darkness and the aurora.
One of the best museums I've ever been to. No entry fee. Current exhibits are on religious devotees, faith in Tromsø, and portraits of locals.
